The rise of Software Defined Instrumentation (SDI)

16 May 2025

Software Defined Instrumentation decouples measurement functionality from hardware, enabling near-real-time configuration, remote management, and generative AI integration.

Modern SoCs integrate AI accelerators, DSPs and CPUs that enable real-time on-device processing. This is a fundamental shift from the traditional model where instruments are fixed-function boxes.

For critical sectors — aerospace, telecom, medical, defense — a localized SDI approach offers security, privacy and reduced cloud costs while preserving the flexibility that software-defined architectures promise.

The open question remains: where to draw the line between Edge processing and Cloud processing? The answer is likely application-specific, but the trend is clear — more intelligence is moving to the edge, closer to the sensor, closer to the experiment.
